With the Federal Government's decision to build a mosque for the Muslims in the Estate, pressure was mounted for a similar goodwill to be extended to the Christians. The initial idea was to build a "Westminster type" temple with four wings as an ecumenical chapel. However, the objection of the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos to the idea led to the building of a two separate churches, one allocated to the Roman Catholics and the other to the Anglican Communion. The allocation to the Anglican Communion was in itself a divine favour as it was competed for by all the "protestanf' denominations. As it turned out, the file on the subject got to the table of one Engr. Olusoji Olugbekan, the then most senior director in the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.
It was referred to him as both the Hon. Minister and Permanent Secretary were on official tours. He put the file aside, and on the following Sunday got dressed and visited the churches in the estate. At 8 a.m. there was the Methodist congregation where he met the layman who led the youth dominated congregation. Like Samuel of old, he asked atter the service: "Is there no other church in the estate?" He was told of one that worshiped at 10 a.m. so he waited for the 10 a.m. service. At 10 a.m. the atmosphere was different. There was organ music, a fully-attired choir, a priest and a procession to commence the service. At the end of the service, he had no problem drawing his conclusions without disclosing his identity and mission. When days later, he saw the Archbishop of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) entering the office of the Hon. Minister of Works and Housing, he felt the satisfaction of a civil servant whose proposals had been accepted by his boss! Years later when he became a member of the congregation, we felt grateful to God for having used him the way He did.
The church structure was dedicated on 28th January, 1990 (Epiphany IV) by the Bishop who had then become Archbishop of the Province of Nigeria and Bishop of Lagos. The Ven. (Dr.) S.O.M. Adebola, Archdeacon of Lagos (now Bishop of Yewa) and the retired.Bishop of Egba-Egbado, The Rt. Revd. J.A. Adeniyi accompanied the bishop. The dedication service was attended by 524 worshippers and the text of the sermon by the Archbishop was Matt. 5:8-16. The following Sunday, 4th February, 1990, the Vicar, Canon (Dr.) S.O. Adesina introduced Evensong. A very ready help at this early stage of the church life was a lay reader and staff of the Law School, Mr. Josiah O. Malomo. He turned-out to be a moving force behind the Vicar and helped to reduce the work load of the Vicar. Dr. Adesina also commenced work on a Sunday School/Administrative Block and almost completed it before he was re-assigned on 18th July 1993.
